Memòria Pétria is a project born from stone and tradition. More specifically Ferran Lega explores the acoustic, timbrical and sonic properties of slate tiles. Those pieces of stone are usually find as the most common rooftop covering in the Catalan Pyrenees. The tiles carry within it a historical background that starts with hardcore rock compression and the formation of sheets of metamorphic rock, commonly know as mountains. From there, slate becomes a basic material for the inhabitants of the mountains across history until the present day where misusage and dereliction has changed habits and uses of this black tiles.

Ferran Lega, reckons the deep and rooted into the land background of those tiles and uses them to create soundscapes filed with memories, textures and life of its own by extracting the electroacoustic trademark of this partially resonant materials.

As a homage to the way those rocks are formed and its transformation through centuries, Ferran Lega treats the sounds extracted from the slate tiles in the same way. Through a process of layering, filtering and morphing of long term recordings using contact microphones and exposing the tiles into various situations designed to activate the resonant capabilities of the material.

The outcome is this album, a series of recordings, compositions and textures echoing the burden of centuries of usage and homaging, sonically materials that become sonic textures.

Someone could argue the value of keeping a Netlabel alive this days. Many are the reasons to move to other spheres, media or formats but sometimes, there are a projects that by the nature of it, bring along a sense of coherence to what we do.  Even that the concept behind Ilir Lluka's work is not about that, a certain aspect of it, it is. This is maybe the use of a very short span of time to develop a piece of work such as "An Étude In Two Variations" that only last 10 minutes.  By its shortness, one thinks that a net-release is the best way to present this kind of work, and we are glad to find again reasons to keep supporting this kind of craft.

"An Étude In Two Variations" is a two track album. Both pieces are the outcome of an exercise in composition in which Lluka stablished a common begining for both pieces and a certain set of timbers that would shape both compositions as similar. The only difference between both pieces is the sound source of each. The first one uses a japanese koto and electronics, and the second a custom made synthesizer (a mixture of Nord modular patches combined with a virtual synthesizer designed by himself). Both compositions follow more or less the same compositional line but each one in its own character, similar timbers but unexpected and distant outcomes.

This is the release page of the outcome of the 9 days workshop "Audiotalaia Summer Camp" held at El Polell, Montseny, Barcelona, Catalonia between the 13th and the 22nd of July 2018.

The works are the result of various exercises proposed by Edu Comelles and the outcome is the what remained of different collective processes taking place within various groups of participants at the Summer Camp.

Very short premises where stablished for the exercises giving a big amount of creative freedom and the right amount of constriction. Final presentations open to the public are also featured in this album. These are works done collectively and without creative or technical restrictions.

Le Espectacle de la Société du l'Espectacle is the latest work by galician artist Durán Vázquez. This album has been divided in three parts that are presented as a continuous reflection on soundscapes of our contemporary life recorded as fragments of common places in our western capitalist contemporary society. Leisure, sports, cultural manifestations, protests and daily life are entangled together to shape a tapestry of how Durán Vázquez perceives his immediate environment. In his own words Vázquez states that those recordings and the fusion between whats fictional and whats truthful aims to portray the implicit political aspects of the daily life soundscape, regardless of what society defines itself.

The album is furrowed by electronic sonic structures that detaches the listener from the inmersive experience of the soundscape. It seems that those instances are a reflection of a certain feeling of rejection from the artist himself, a way to listen to the environment with perspective, and distance; or just as if drowned by soundscapes, we need to swim up to catch a breath from all the complexities and noises from the mundane soundscape around us.

Who knows.

Reviews:

Marxist theorist Guy Debord warned about the seductions of the information age long before the internet existed: “Young people everywhere have been allowed to choose between love and a garbage disposal unit. Everywhere they have chosen the garbage disposal unit.” With an eye (and ear) on public sites haunted by specters of consumerism, the Galician sound artist mulches field recordings into vexing soundscapes. The first track opens with water lapping a lakeshore; but the tranquility is soon bruised by motorboats. An electronic drone provides a quiet foil for the furious recreation. Transporting us from an idle day on the lake to a street rally, shouts for help unsettle beside gunshots on the second track. Bleating car horns sound like a flock of strangled geese; elsewhere, a studio laugh track cackles eerily. The final track seethes with gurgles and gratings. Passing airplanes drown out a speech, the announcer coaxing chants from the crowd. (In an era of tribal politics, authority captivates when amplified on stage.) Life may be a festival filled with ghosts of our desires; but if the party never stops, how will we know what we celebrate versus what we mourn? Never has a garbage disposal sounded so broken.

Sometimes opportunities present itself in front of you. You might not know at first glance but eventually you end up being certain about that right decision and the outcome of it through time.

In 2011 after having booked a concert by Avelino Saavedra in Valencia, we approached him and invited to prepare an album for Audiotalaia Digital Catalogue. He was one of the firsts artists to release a work on the label under the premise of meeting him in person before decide whether we release or not his work. A rule we brake sometimes but we try to keep it in full. By that time, 2011, Saavedra delivered “Ink Soundsketches” our 40th release at the date and his first LP by him exploring a limited palette of colours, instrumentation and electronics. That album was an exercise of distillation of certain sonic and musical explorations Saavedra was working on at that time.

Almost 2 years after, Saavedra approached us again, this time he was delivering “MUD” our 63rd in our Digital Catalogue. This album was the consequence of a workflow that narrowed his focus, understanding that a minimalistic approach on sound sources was a path to enhance creativity and increasing the challenge in terms of experimentation. “MUD” was made only using one single instrument, a ridiculously big “Udu” Drum and a few microphones and pedals. The outcome a tapestry of textures and harsh soundscapes made out of sustained and freeze notes, noise and effects. But that was it, Saavedra completely obsessed until exhaustion squeezing all possible outcomes of a very limited process.

Three years we have been waiting for the next call by Avelino Saavedra. Three years in which this Galician-born artist has been recording, playing and releasing music with his fellow saxophonist Josep Lluis Galiana. This duo, focuses attention on various forms of Free Improvisation but mainly: good old Free-Jazz (go to Lusicina Discos or their own bandcamp and dig in). This, intense period (that is not over at all) has consequences. Saavedra has regained and re-invented his very early instrument: drums. Saavedra was born and raised as a drummer for punk and hardcore bands in gloomy Galicia, and hey! That explains a lot, isn’t it?

Playing along with Galiana while recovering the use of a Drum Kit, Saavedra said and stated as some sort of revelation: “yes, I am a drummer, that’s me”. Maybe he already knew, maybe he just needed a little push, after all, Galicians are well known for being very doubtful people.

“Frozen Drumscapes” is the point of convergence between a career that started on the underground Galician hardcore scene and a meticulous process of exploration on the realm of sound composition or experimental music. The point of convergence triggers a very complex and long process of distilling all sonic possibilities of an exquisitely custom-made Drum Kit, a full instrument, composed by various pieces of drums, meticulously chosen pedals and tons of hours of practice, essay and error. And when we say tons of hours, we really mean it. This guy practices, records and plays on a daily basis.

And this is it, again Saavedra, working tirelessly on a single concept, extracting the whole juice to a limited and constrained set of rules, battling constantly with doubt, intuition and assertiveness, all in one, exploring the unknown.

Lets get back to the beginning of the story: “Sometimes opportunities present itself in front of you” this is it. We didn’t know that Ink Soundsketches would (somehow) trigger MUD and we didn’t know that after that, Saavedra would recover drums hand in hand with Galiana. We didn’t know that the next consequence would be something as precise, bold, profound and intelligent as “Frozen Drumscapes”. We didn’t know that, but we are glad to be there and witness that story and the ones to come in the future.

Paisajes sonoros, memoria olvidada y oscuras melodías.

A stream of harmonics, resonances and ceramic.

Tomoko Sauvage is a Japanese born sound artist currently living in Paris. His work centres the attention on sound experimentation with bowls of china of different sizes, water and hydrophones (subaquatic microphones). Sauvage Plays with a variety of sounds and bells extracted directly of the manipulation of the bowls, the bubbles, the water and the resonances of these elements. All this combined with drones and natural harmonics creating a delicate balance between chaos, containment and randomness. The resultant game is a fluid audible landscape that changes and dialogues with the space through his fragile tonalities.

Tomoko Sauvage currently offers workshops and has taken part in exhibitions in Europe, United States, Canada and Japan; often in solitary or in collaboration with other musicians and choreographers. His works have been published by labels such as and/OAR (JA), aposiopèse (BE), dokidoki editions (FR)

US), aposiopèse (BE), dokidoki editions (FR).

One of the principal tasks of a label such as this one has to take the pulse of the moment, of what’s going on right now in certain parcels, scenes, etc… This might be the case of the release we are hereby presenting.

Atilio Doreste and José Guillén are two improvisers that found each other in the Island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands reef. And they found each other by exploring, experimenting and developing an intuitive framework around a few core ideas and basic principles. Some of those ideas already explored and analysed on the previous release by Doreste on Audiotalaia “Shifting Boundaries” in which this Canarian photographer explored environmental improvisations with small circuit bending devices.

Doreste and Guillen meet quite often in fact, through social networks, one can follow their adventures; those happening almost weekly. Their explorations consists in exploring various locations and engaging in place, the soundscape by playing with it, altering it or de-form it. This basic premise it’s not new at all, many have been exploring and engaging with this kind of environmental performance as Dallas Simpson would define. “This side of Paradise” is just one more testimony of their sonic encounter and window into their own practice and exploration. Despite the fact that this is almost becoming a genre there is always something new to add to it.

In our case, in Audiotalaia we like to understand this kind of releases as some valuable documentation on the actual state of work by this two experimenters. More than the culmination of a workflow it seems that, “This Side Of Paradise” is just a milestone of a wider and more complex creative process Doreste and Guillen are pursuing.

So, the challenge here is not to invent the new genre in sound art if not: how to frame, present and disseminate a stream of creativity. Both ends: the artists working on their unattainable workflow and the label (a device in charge of pasting things in time, frame them and isolate it from the becoming) had to agree, edit and present a final work in the shape of a release. A release that captures the decisive moment, that explains it all.
