Environment is the third instalment of the personal project by Elías Merino from Madrid. After a few years collaborating with the electronic ensemble Nuhg, Merino releases on Audiotalaia its fourth release as a solo project.
Environment, at first hearing, comes as a dark ambient release but after a careful listening one can realise that we are in front of something else. Effectively, Merino presents a three track album full of nuances and details that provides us with a new perspective. It seems that even that Merino seeks to find a space somewhere in between dark industrial sounds and a more electroacoustic approach in terms of composition.
It is remarkable the use of different sound sources and how this are combined with silence and tension between sound scenes. We can see how the album, even that each track has specific themes, shifts from one track to the other using similar elements but always changing.
Merino also provides a conceptual background to his oeuvre, attached to the release, the text is written in spanish. We don’t dare to translate it because of its nature.

El mundo creó su yo con la vida, la vida engendró ejemplos para justificarse y uno de ellos abandonó su condición para morir y ser renacido como hombre. La técnica como concepto, en definición orteguiana, creó al hombre y no al revés, y será la técnica, absoluta poseedora de su voluntad y conciencia, quien acabe con su historia para abrirse paso. Environment pretende poner en reflexión y en conflicto la definición de "hombre" como ser partícipe, en comunión y bajo las leyes de su entorno primigenio siendo válido en el mismo mediante sus recursos. Esta idea de hombre, neblinosa, torpe y embrutecida por un ridículo e inconsciente sentimiento de traición y de idealizar un retorno, se ve cuestionada por las evidencias de un nacimiento de su identidad distinto, a que el verdadero origen del hombre está en el instante que encontró la forma de obviar y reducir a la nada su matriz para alzarse como nuevo creador y concebir el progreso por sí mismo, a que el hombre nació con la técnica y no puede darle la espalda, que ésta da sentido a su yo y ésta engendrará ejemplos nuevos.
