Avelino Saavedra is a multidisciplinary artist currently living in Valencia, Spain. His work ranges from ink drawings to sound performance, video and painting. Musically trained as a drummer, Saavedra has been involved since many years in various projects of free improvisation, jazz, performance arts, noise, experimentation and hardcore. Collaborations include pieces with well known spanish performer Bartolomé Ferrando, Truna and Martí Guillem (AttA). Currently he is involved in the improvisation ensemble created at La Clinica Mundana, La Orquesta Mundana, a joint of various experimental musicians from Valencia. The very specificity of Saavedra’s sound is based on the usage of infinite variety of instruments, objects and materials. He builds his own flutes and collects anything that can produce a sound.
His work is mainly based on analogue equipment. His personal process of work involves recording live and realtime processing of sound through loops, pedals, and analogue effects. Therefor the very nature of Saavedra sound is based on organicity and intuition passing through postproduction and editing, Saavedra delivers sound sketches that are unique. On live concerts he’s working under the same premises providing to his live performance with a big charge of unexpectancy.
Luckily I had the opportunity to hear Saavedra live many times in Valencia and the consistency of his approach is widely regarded a a fresh and active performance in which the listener is always paying attention to Saavedra’s movements.
After a few months of preparation he delivers this Ink Soundsketches, the first CC licensed album by this Galician artist. Ink Soundsketches is a gathering of various live recordings done at home in which Saavedra explores the compositional possibilities that can arise from various Eastern traditional instruments, oscillators, pedals and reverbs.
Instead of using a bast palette of instruments and sound objects Ink Soundsketches is a close up to a few instruments that Saavedra controls and tweaks its sounds building drones, pads; always splattered with sound textures pulled out through a process of learning and understanding the nature of those instruments.

O traballo de Saavedra nace a partir da intuición e a mestura de distintas técnicas e tecnoloxías analóxicas. Tanto o seu traballo como artista visual como o seu traballo sonoro están sustentados por unha idea común que crece a partir da observación escóitaa e o traballo metódico.
Finalmente, Ink SoundSketches é un percorrido sonoro experimental que nos leva a través dunha tradición musical e sonora desmenuzada, transformada e reinventada.

Zeitgenössische Tonkunst aus Spanien erreichte mich bisher immer aus der katalanischen Stadt Barcelona, eine Begebenheit, die sich mit dem gebürtigen Galicier Avelino Saavedra, der in Valencia residiert, nicht (bzw. nur ansatzweise) bestätigt, welcher auf “Ink Soundsketches” Ambient mit Gänsehautfaktor zelebriert.
“Ink Soundsketches” erschien bei dem ebenfalls in Valencia ansässigen Label Audiotalaia, das Herr Edu Comelles führt, dessen Konzept auf einem Dialog von Tonkunst & Herkunft beruht. Zudem stehen alle Releases auf der katalanischen Manufaktur zum kostenfreien Download, womit aber Audiotalaia der Klasse von Avelino Saavedra nicht gerecht wird, welcher definitiv auf eine rein physikalische Veröffentlichung gehört.
Innerhalb seiner dunklen Klangcollagen verarbeitet der Spanier Themen aus den Gebieten Genetik, Natur & Mythologie, die sich alle in einem esoterischen Kontext befinden, das der Künstler perfekt mittels Instrumente wie Gong in die Tonkunst transportierte, weshalb die Konsumenten auf “Ink Soundsketches” in eine wohlig warme Welt mit hohem Berauschungsfaktor eintauchen. Aber wie bei den meisten Publikationen im Ambient dominieren die Sounds das Geschehen, wo Avelino Saavedra auf Organik setzt, die er mittels analoger Signale (Gong, Schellen, Schlagwerk (Blech) usw. ) erschafft, welche der Arbeit eine gewisse Komplexität verleihen. Des Weiteren verwendete der Galicier unzählige Effekt, deren Strukturen oft in Schleifen enden, das diesem Oeuvre einen entspannenden Charakter verleiht, der sich von Durchlauf zu Durchlauf steigert und teilweise an buddhistische Zeremonien erinnert. Wer sich gerne asiatischen Klängen hingibt, sollte “Ink Soundsketches” unbedingt antesten, das vor allem durch seine phänomenale Ausdruckskraft, & die daraus resultierende Vereinnahmung, besticht. Insgesamt ein sehr geschlossenes Opus, dessen Stärke auf der konzeptionellen Begabung des Protagonisten beruht, der alle Tondokumente im Liveaufnahmeverfahren erschuf, weshalb die Hörerschaft hier absolut unique Kunst erfährt, welche von der ersten bis zur letzten Sekunde einfängt und verzaubert – Wahnsinn!

Durchgängiger Hochgenuss, den man bei Gefallen definitiv nicht abbricht! PS: Love it or hate it!
Fazit:
Avelino Saavedra präsentiert mit “Ink Soundsketches” ein Meisterwerk des Ambient, das aufgrund seiner phantastischen Instrumentierung seines Gleichen sucht – meine absolute Empfehlung! PS: Wer Buddha genauso schätzt wie experimentelle Elektronik, muss diese Arbeit unbedingt gehört haben!
